How Long Should NHS Supporting Information Be?
Length is a symptom of coverage, not a target
There is no officially mandated word count for NHS supporting information although there is some sort of word limit. The right length depends on the band, the role complexity, and how many essential criteria you need to address. That said, there are practical ranges that reflect what panels expect at each level.
Practical length guide by band
Band 2 and 3: 600 to 800 words. Fewer criteria, more straightforward examples.
Band 4 and 5: 800 to 1,100 words. More criteria to evidence, including clinical or professional competence alongside soft skills.
Band 6 and above: 1,100+ words. Senior roles expect detailed evidence of leadership, clinical decision-making, and service contribution. A short statement will look thin.
Why longer is not always better
Shortlisting panels often review dozens of applications in a sitting. Dense text without structure is hard to read quickly and makes it difficult to locate evidence for each criterion. Length only helps when the content inside it is strong and the structure is clear. Vague padding makes a long statement feel longer and weaker.

Why too short is also a problem
At the other end, a very brief statement on a senior role signals a lack of preparation or a lack of relevant evidence. A panel seeing 200 words on a Band 6 clinical application will reasonably assume the candidate either does not meet the criteria or has not bothered to demonstrate that they do.
The simplest approach
Stop thinking about length and think about coverage. Work through every essential criterion and give each one at least one strong, specific example. Then check the desirable criteria and add evidence where you genuinely have it. When every criterion is properly addressed, your length will land where it needs to.
